In this issue of Style, we have an interview with some of Canterbury’s finest rugby players – Andy Ellis, Robbie Fruean and Marty McKenzie – and learn there is much more to them than just their professional game (pg. 14). With New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) on the horizon, I catch up with Turet Knuefermann, owner and designer of women’s fashion brand TK. She sheds the light on how the industry has developed over the past decade and what we can expect to see at NZFW this year (pg. 12). Gerald Carter and Marilyn Carter-Smith invite us into their stunning 140-year-old home in Tai Tapu to view their clever design that seamlessly mixes the old with the new (pg. 18). We then provide a new ‘get the look’ page for those wishing to mimic their style, plus highlight fantastic ideas for the kitchen. As always, we bring you top international trends in both Lux Living and Fashion News. If there’s one thing every woman of style knows it’s that Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris is the most definitive event of the year. On show are some of the most beautiful clothes in the world, by the likes of Dior, Chanel and Valentino. We pick out some favourite looks on page 44. Our food writer, Vanessa Ortynsky, has been out and about. She attended Maddison Restaurant’s Paddock to Plate event, devouring an amazing five-course degustation menu and also experienced Kum Pun Thai Restaurant on Victoria Street, which is by no means your run-of-the-mill Thai restaurant (pg. 63). eXPeRienCe. One of the most haunted yet beautiful ballets ever written is the story of Giselle. Follow the tragedy of her broken heart and descent into madness. Choreographed so gracefully it will bring a tear to the staunchest of eyes. The RNZB will be performing this in Christchurch at the Isaac Theatre Royal, 23-24 August. New Zealand will be the first in the world to use the recently launched Heineken Live App, which uses technology developed by Kiwis. The app encourages people to get out and explore their city by offering on-the-spot rewards and surprise experiences, such as flights around the country, helicopter transport to an event or special access to VIP areas in venues. The more you get out and explore the city, the more rewards and experiences you can unlock. Some of the participating bars in Christchurch include Vespa Bar, Aikmans, Christchurch Casino, Spice Paragon and Fiddlesticks.

Five Minutes

with turet Knuefermann Owner and designer of women’s fashion brand TK, Turet is known for her sleek, sexy and effortless designs that make a woman feel elegant and sophisticated. Speaking with Victoria Tait we get a sneak peek into what we can expect to see from her at New Zealand Fashion Week, August 22-28.

How would you describe your personal style? And how does this impact on your designs? i hate to talk about myself... my style is simple – i love the contrast of masculine and feminine: essentially male cuts like a suit or classic shirt made in fabric that oozes femininity such as soft cashmere or sandwashed silk. Our designs are refined and sexy. feminine. there is an empowerment that women have, that men have through other things. i want to give women that confidence to be who they are. with our garments, you can forget about what you’re wearing and just be yourself. What sort of woman wears your clothing? the woman who knows what she wants, and doesn’t want to take the time to fuss. She is smart, confident and embraces her femininity. What can we expect to see from your new collection at this year’s NZFW? easy glamour, refined silhouettes, textures, luxurious finishes and unexpected combinations of fabrics that will create an effortless new take on casual luxe. this year i will be pushing the boundaries of how fabrics can be utilised to create a fresh

and innovative take on those key basics, which will see us through the season feeling like we have a wardrobe full of things to cherish! excited. From where have you drawn inspiration for this collection? i drew my inspiration from the latest innovations in fabric construction: new vegan leathers, high-tech fabric finishing and sumptuous knits are the essential ingredients to define our look this season. as with most of my designs over the last decade, in essence, it’s about letting the fabric do the talking and my fascination for the effect that an unworked shape can have for the wearer. How has fashion changed over the decade in which you’ve been producing your label? i think one of the biggest changes in this decade is the awareness amongst us all of wanting to promote ethical manufacturing and a move away from usage of materials like leather and angora, which often come from sources that can’t be guaranteed to be cruelty-free. we want to know where our products are made and are in the knowledge that we can all play a part

in making a difference. every choice we now make with our purchases is a more conscious one. What would you say is your greatest career highlight so far? Opening the new Knuefermann store in the historic kauri timber building on fanshawe Street, auckland, with its dream fit-out and unconventional access to act as a gallery in which to present the garments. it reflects a luxurious consumer experience along with the european style and clean lines we are well known for. reflecting our garment textiles the natural elements of wood, stone and light combine to create a beautifully unique shopping destination. with our clients finding their lives increasingly filled up with ‘busy noise’, i wanted to create a haven for them to take some time off and focus attention on how they think about themselves. it’s an intimate and engaging luxury experience that feels special. Who would you love to dress and why? i love to dress all women! that’s how i ended up in this business: it’s such a pleasure to meet such a variety of inspiring, successful and beautiful women – each with her unique sense of style and presence.

Speaking with some of our favourite boys of the red-and-black jersey, Marty McKenzie, Robbie Fruean and Andy Ellis, Victoria Tait discovers their top style tips, travel destinations and why you don’t want to room with Wyatt Crockett. PHOTOGRAPHY Robyn WilSon, AnyWhERE i RoAM

Style | in profile

My first impression of Andrew Ellis, Robbie Fruean and Marty McKenzie, is how impeccably well media trained these men are. They are professional athletes at the top of their game, role models for our younger generations, well spoken, and have an ability to make you feel at ease. It makes you wonder why rugby still holds a stigma of players as thugs, where the reality could not be further from this. Halfback Andrew (Andy) Ellis, at 32, is one of the veterans of the team. A member of the Rugby World Cupwinning All Black side in 2011, this will be his eleventh year for the Crusaders. Andy has scored 134 Super Rugby points and is a Crusaders’ centurion. He is also an award-winning landscape gardener, a radio host and father of two, and now splits his time between

New Zealand and Japan. Midfield-back Robbie Fruean (28) is welcomed back to the Crusaders with open arms after a brief stint with the Chiefs in 2014. Known for his speed and agility, Robbie’s career started in 2007, when he represented New Zealand in the Under-19 Rugby World Championship, consequently named the IRB World Under-19 Player of the Year. His career, however, was briefly put on hold due to a life-threatening illness called pancarditis, which causes inflammation of the heart. Robbie underwent open-heart surgery and then joined the Crusaders in 2010, when he came back fighting to become the joint leading try scorer and ITM Cup Player of the Year. It might surprise you to know Robbie is also a barber by trade and known as the most stylish player on the

team. He also has a passion for cooking. First five-eighth/utility-back Marty McKenzie (23) has rugby in his blood. Born and bred in Invercargill, he is the older brother of Chiefs first five-eighth Damian McKenzie and cousin to former Maori All Black Robbie Robinson. Marty made his Super Rugby debut in 2013 for the Blues, only a year after playing for New Zealand under-20s in the 2012 Junior World Championships. However, it was in 2014, when playing for Taranaki in the ITM Cup that Marty’s ability really shone. Known as a very versatile player with good kicking ability, Marty has also played for Taranaki in the 2014 ITM Cup, Maori All Blacks tour of Japan in 2014 and Chiefs in 2015. Off the field, you are likely to spot Marty down at King of Snake, or having a hit on the golf course.

In the mad rush to Christmas-holiday celebrations at Akaroa in 1996, Gerald Carter and Marilyn Carter-smith noticed a ramshackle villa, creamery and stables. They fell in love, not with the home, but the stables, barn and creamery that were worn, dirty and a little bit shabby round the edges. so it was that viewing and negotiations began, when most people were sitting back and relaxing in the summer sun of New Year. The homestead, formerly the farmhouse of sir Heaton rhodes, was subdivided in 1873, when John Joseph Herrick bought the villa along with 40 hectares. It was he who then built the creamery to create a dairy co-operative – the first of its kind in New Zealand – as well as a barn, and extended the house to accommodate his brood of 13 children. once Gerald and Marilyn purchased the property the first decision for them was how best to use light to create a seamless layout. The solution was to gut the interior completely. “sometimes it’s just easier to start over,” Marilyn says. What stands today is a huge light-filled living space, separate library/office/dining room, with all the modern conveniences for cooking and daily chores. The couple cleverly changed what was once a hallway into a scullery for the kitchen, which is now dressed in stainless steel and bricked tiles to create a beautiful but extremely practical working area. The grand and long table that sits comfortably in the living space was made out of reclaimed wood from the property and is utilised as a dining table, kitchen workspace or office surface. The leftover piece of hallway is an en-suite for the master bedroom. Mirrors were inserted into the panels of the doors and surrounds of the library entranceway to transfer light and also create an excellent method of spying. The wooden flooring is kept highly polished by Marilyn, providing a reflection of the outside inside. This home has a perfect mix of both old and new. Contemporary touches include a Peter stutchbury painting, small artworks in the library, as well as a primary-coloured lighting fixture in the sitting area. The enchantment of old remains. so much so it would not be a surprise if Anne of Green Gables peered around the corner with her red plaits. Three attic bedrooms, one of which is accessed by fold-down stairs in the scullery, create nooks of privacy for family or guests who come to stay.

Perhaps the greatest achievement, though, is the transformation of the outbuildings that have been sympathetically enhanced to create accommodation. It is in these buildings that the volunteer wwooFers (world wide opportunities on organic Farms) are housed while they help on the land, or paying guests come to enjoy the now-named Tai Tapu Lodge, its surrounds and the hospitality of this couple. In the stables, the Herrick name is still seen in the graffiti of yesteryear. The couple have also left the old newspaper articles glued to the walls and ceiling, maintaining those precious links to the past. Gerald and Marilyn have created their own graffiti wall, too; a chalkboard wall painted 12 years ago in the main house is where messages are left, important notes or inspiring messages are taken down. some may say Gerald and Marilyn are conjurers of space or alchemists of design. whatever the title, these two have managed to create a magical place in which to live while conserving the history of past times, for people to visit and for future generations to admire.

expert it’s a minefield of mixed messages, as are the daily doses of speculation you receive from the media about interest rates and loanto-value ratios. Now let’s consider some of the latest items of discussion. The Christchurch Rental Market The Christchurch rental market was good – very, very good – for a long time for some landlords, especially post-earthquake where urgent needs, insurance payments and strong returns drove up rental prices. The picture now is completely different. It was recently reported in The Press that some Christchurch landlords were offering rent reductions, or even short periods of no rent, as an incentive for tenants.

This now includes a state of homelessness for a number of New Zealanders and their families. Deeply serious, this situation is an enormous challenge for politicians and social services alike, and it’s something that seems to be so much more visible and obvious in different parts of the country.

Rents are being pushed down and compliance costs are going up, but landlords who entered into investment property expecting a bed of roses were being naïve.

This presents against a background of decreased levels of affordability and home ownership, and is coupled with an increased interest in property investment. Even for an

Today’s marketplace requires a long-term view (as does most investment), a fair rent, a realisation that smoke alarms and insulation are expected, and an acknowledgement that capital gain still underpins wealth creation. Rental property acquisition is more than

a speculative process and so you learn to take the good with the not-so-good and, occasionally, ugly. If you’re being an unrealistic landlord and your property is vacant, do yourself a favour and address the rent! Affordability and First-home Ownership Despite the exorbitant prices of property in some parts of New Zealand, it’s still possible to purchase, but obviously compromise is an essential ingredient. Getting started is just that, and you should temper your expectations accordingly. Over the years I’ve tended to take the view that everyone wants everything now, without necessarily putting the hard work in but, judgement aside, finding the deposit for a first home is still an incredibly disciplined act. I’ve got to stand by sage advice that was given to me when we purchased our first property centuries ago: work hard, go without, save, and hope your parents can help in some way. I guess from that perspective nothing’s changed! Stay warm, spring is coming.

Fog pendants – Zero lighting

tangerine Stool – Simon James

Simple

and elegant

Bone Bowl – tom dixon

A kitchen is a functional space that works best with clean lines and just one or two bold materials. Once you have decided on a lead material – perhaps a large chunk of marble, or a backdrop of wooden cabinetry – keep the rest simple. If you can, create a cabinetry system that will hide everything from the fridge and dishwasher to the pantry, and all the kitchen accessories that usually clutter a bench. When the doors are closed, you are left with a wall of wood, a bench of marble or concrete, and a calm setting. Increasingly, the kitchen bench is becoming an informal place to eat breakfast or have a drink in the evening. With this in mind, design a bench top that can easily fit bar

stools around it, and ensure you can fit your legs comfortably underneath. If space allows, a cantilevered bench enhances a sense of lightness and loftiness. A set of bar stools in a natural wooden finish, like the Tangerine Stool by Simon James, will complement any setting. Fittings should be kept simple. A single curved faucet over a sink can be a feature on its own. Concerning accessories, you can play with pendant lighting above the bench top – I love these Fog Pendants by Zero Lighting. Think of just one strong sculptural tabletop piece that can stay out at all times, such as the Tom Dixon Bone Bowl. A piece like this will look beautiful empty, but can also function as a fruit bowl.

Kitchen StyleS From contemporary to farmhouse we look at today’s most popular trends to give you all the inspiration you will need for a beautiful kitchen design.

Contemporary a modern kitchen should be sleek, sexy and sophisticated. the design should be full of clever hideaways, including sculleries and integrated appliances, to keep clutter to a minimum. Materials such as reflective surfaces, marble, stone and exotic woods add a touch of luxury. often set in an open-plan environment, less is more with this design. Function meets family friendliness with plenty of room to work and interact.

Country Farmhouse enjoy the feeling of a weekend getaway right at home with a country-inspired kitchen. Farmhouse tables and furniture create a lived-in look. Focus on a colour range including primary red, yellow and blue, creams and pale yellow. regarding room styling, mixing rather than matching is the country way to go. the family table should be placed in the heart of the kitchen to create a cosy family area. try to buy vintage items to give it the authentic rustic feel.

traditional if you long for a time when materials were robust, and craftsmanship was king, a traditional design is what you are after. Look for finishes with lots of carving and detail. Stone or polished wooden floors and cream cabinetry, will obtain the look. Finishing touches include an aga stove, and glass-panelled or glass doors on cupboards. Antique-look light fixtures will add a special touch. the look is clean and comfortable with a hint of luxury.

PoweRed by the Sun Due to the extensive cost of heating, luxury hotels of the world are now starting to switch their heating source to solar. MGM Resorts, one of Las Vegas’s largest and most iconic hotel companies, has installed what is believed to be the largest rooftop solar array in America and the secondbiggest in the world. Some 20,000 solar panels now sprawl out across a whopping 20 acres, soaking up the scorching Nevada sun.

HEAT PUMPS FOR EVERY SPACE Looking to invest in a heat pump, but not sure which model best suits your home? HPAC has a wide range of Daikin heat pumps for every space.

If you have wall space that isn’t impeded by furniture, a Daikin L Series floor console is your best bet. The L Series draws cool air from the bottom of the room and sends warm air out at the same low level to have it naturally rise. You’ll feel every bit of heat they provide. Also available is Daikin’s new Nexura floor console, which features a small radiant heat front panel to provide two types of heat. If you’re aiming for optimal energy efficiency, the Daikin Ururu Sarara (US7) range includes New Zealand’s only 7-Star rated heat pump in the FTXZ25NV1B. Energy efficiency isn’t the only thing that this flagship range of heat pumps provide. They are able to humidify and dehumidify the air. If you’re after a stylish option, we suggest the European designed Daikin Zena high wall series. Available in White and Silver, the Zena features a sweeping curved front. Slim and quiet, the FTXJ25PVMA is able to run at a low 19dbA. The Zena is sophisticated with a built in Wifi Module to allow the system to be operated away from home on the owner’s device. For the budget-conscious, the classically styled Daikin Cora Range is smaller than the P Series high wall range and more efficient. The Cora is available in the full range of sizes from a small 2.7kW model to a 10.3kW model. If entire home heating is what you need, Daikin offers a large range of Central Ducted and Multi Split heat pump systems that can be customised to your home. Get in touch with HPAC today to see which heat pump best suits your needs.

Forward Trends

The prospect of warmer spring days is just around the corner, with lengthening daylight hours, warmer temperatures and new growth in the garden. It’s a good time to look at the upcoming spring and summer landscape design and garden trends. Landscape architect Craig Wilson prepares us for the season ahead. Landscape areas These are becoming increasingly integrated with the key living spaces of the home. Outdoor decks and patios are frequently connected to the living room and kitchen, forming an extended ‘home hub’ where the indoor-outdoor definition is somewhat blurred. The concept of the outdoor room will feature strongly in newseason projects where overhead structures will give the opportunity and flexibility to create shade where its most needed in the summer months. This concept will be continually enhanced as high-end fixtures, like display screens, fireplaces and outdoor kitchens, are increasingly incorporated into project design. Look out for a bit of bling, as decorative lighting pieces will also be introduced to these spaces, adding another layer of detail and character. Garden desIGn edible plants continue to be a feature. This will extend beyond the traditional vege garden we all know, to edibles used to form structural fruiting hedges with spring-flowering interest – think feijoas and blueberries. Citrus will continue to be popular. explore the likes of mandarins and lemonades

The use of larger flax specimens will reduce in urban settings and smaller native hybrids requiring less longterm maintenance will become more popular. The increased use of native and exotic ferns will provide the lush, green look that continues to be in high demand. native planting will be integrated and blended with exotic specimen to create a planting aesthetic that reflects a greater ‘sense of place’ for new Canterbury gardens, with references to colonial and pre-colonial influences. Exotic perennials will be increasingly used to create dramatic, but restrained flowering colour highlights among large drifts of ground cover and shrub layer natives.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS with Tim Goom

SpEcIALISEd LANdScApING: ThE SouTh ISLANd The South Island is renowned for its unsurpassed rugged beauty. In some of our most scenic areas, care needs to be taken to ensure a symbiosis exists between landscaping and the natural backdrop so the vista is highlighted and enhanced. Goom Landscapes have a significant presence in urban Christchurch with a multitude of projects across the city, however our Landscape Architects also enjoy projects further afield in some of the country’s most stunning locations. We work throughout the country, from Auckland all the way down to Invercargill, and we have found that a unique touch is needed for each area and its conditions. This issue focusses on the differences and peculiarities of the South Island in particular, as there is variation enough to speak of in just this one island… next month we focus on Auckland.

• Maintaining ecological planting in line with the area. Not only will this support the continuation of some of New Zealand’s rarer plants but it will harmonise with the natural landscape. Other areas benefit from warmer temperatures than Christchurch, such as Banks Peninsula, which is well known for having a micro climate. These microclimates and pockets of warmth around the South Island offer the opportunity to plant species that would otherwise not be seen down here. Vibrant pohutakawa’s bloom throughout summer in Tai Tapu, signalling a climb in temperature. Nikau palms flourish in Akaroa giving a tropical feel and many Akaroa holiday homes will enjoy a continuous supply of varied fruits from their own trees in to the cooler months. Proteas and leucadendrons also thrive in this climate. The steep inclines on many Akaroa sections provide challenges, a Landscape Architect can advise on plantings and retaining to manage sharp slopes and avoid slips during periods of heavy rain. For those with seafront properties, care will need to be taken to select salt tolerant plants which can withstand the differing soil composition.

Areas like Queenstown, Wanaka, Akaroa and Hanmer all have stunning views, yet each calls for a unique design approach in order to work within the specific terrain and different landscaping techniques appropriate to the climate and conditions. In an urban setting, strong design can stand alone as the focal point of the outdoor space. An understated approach is often more suitable in a rural setting, to create outdoor spaces that are both functional and maximise the use of the setting, using design and materials to respond to extreme contrasts in weather. Fencing options which secure your property but also preserve your view will be vital.

Our Landscape Architects can source local product that is offered from your area to tie your landscape in with your community- for example, stones from your local quarry help tell a story of your area.

Central Otago has some of the most brutal weather conditions in New Zealand - scorching summers followed by bone chilling winters. Factors to consider in locations prone to piercingly cold temperatures include: • Using specialised products such as specific pipes and irrigation systems in order to withstand sub zero temperatures. • Selecting specialised planting to survive in the harsh weather conditions. It is vital to plant to the climate, in this region only plantings which can hold up to heavy snowfall, frosts and strong winds will survive. • Designing to the unique conditions of the area - A Landscape Architect will visualise your landscape covered in a blanket of snow- like the beautiful Japanese gardens - so that you maintain a breathtaking outlook no matter what the season.

PrESErvIng our heritage our new city is building, but the past is not forgotten. Sophie Brooks takes us through some of the repairs and incredible stories of heritage rebuilds in Christchurch.

Cave RoCK Signal MaSt The iconic Cave rock, and the historical signal mast and shelter on top of it will soon be returned to the community. The shelter’s volcanic stone walls are being carefully deconstructed so that a durable, stainless-steel frame can be installed. The walls are then being cleaned and restored to the previous condition, with new windows and a repaired door. The mast itself is being secured and painted, and work is expected to finish in late October, of this year.

Sign of the Kiwi Contractors working to repair and strengthen the Port Hills’ historic Sign of the Kiwi building recently came across an unexpected find – a message scrawled onto the roof lining which reads, “If we had of known you were coming we’d of baked a cake.” The line comes from the lyrics of a 1950 Eileen Barton song, listing all the things she would have done had she known an unexpected visitor was coming. It’s believed the message was written in the 1950s by tradies as they battened the Sign of the Kiwi’s roof, intended as a message for a future visitor who might one day uncover it. It is expected that the Sign of the Kiwi will be handed back to the tenant towards the end of 2016.

For a solid six months Richard and his team of innovative designers have been working hard to create a new portfolio of 30 concept plans that focus on functionality and form. “During this intensive design period we really challenged ourselves by asking how we could do things better in a cost effective way. ThE EATon experience From exhibiting with colin Mccahon to establishing Mountford Winery, Michael eaton has led an extraordinary life. words Anne Hudson

Michael Eaton trained in New Zealand in the 1950s, when “change was in the air”. It was an exciting time to be at art school, and many of his contemporaries – such as Bill Culbert, John Coley, Quentin Macfarlane, Hamish Keith and Dick Frizzell – went on to illustrious careers in the art world. During this time artists began to develop a New Zealand voice. They were influenced by art movements in Europe and America, but lived and worked in New Zealand; their work portrayed the concerns of New Zealanders, the landscape and society. Like many artists, Eaton went on to teach art, first at Linwood High School in Christchurch and then at the Christchurch College of Education. There he trained many well-known artists, including Neil Dawson, Christine Helleyer, Graham Bennett, John Hurrell, in the art of teaching. His students were already art graduates and did not see themselves as teachers, but saw teaching as a way of making a living to support their art practice. Eaton has exhibited widely both in group and solo exhibitions. He recalls representing New Zealand alongside Ralph Hotere and Ray Thorburn at the XIth Biennale in Sao Paulo in 1971. He also remembers being invited, in 1964, to exhibit with now internationally acclaimed Colin McCahon at the Globe Theatre Gallery, Dunedin – he still has the catalogue. McCahon’s paintings sold for between $40 to $60 and Eaton’s for $8. Values are very different today. The list of artists with whom Eaton has exhibited reads like the who’s who of New Zealand art. Personal circumstances, such as the loss of his first wife, and then his wine venture with his second wife Buffy, took his focus away from art for a while. He and Buffy established Mountford Winery in North Canterbury, which became the centre of their attention. The winery sold in 2007, and Eaton, who never gave up painting, was able to rekindle his talent with renewed energy. His approach has changed over the years. Having once been influenced by post-war American and English painters, he now takes a more direct approach to the landscape of the South Island of New Zealand and the outback of Australia. Eaton is an excellent colourist, his paintings are vivid and intense, the abstract landscapes are generic, but the colours and forms awaken memories of the familiar. He has worked in many scales and is currently working with small format work, which is proving popular. Eaton’s aesthetic sense spills into his everyday life. He is a keen jazz enthusiast and a collector of electric guitars, but perhaps his most recognisable trait is his studied sense of dress. He has a wardrobe of 32 pairs of coloured trousers, exemplifying his love of colour, style and sense of fun. He and his wife live in North Canterbury, overlooking the Waipara Basin, where the colours change with the seasons and the limestone lands provide plenty of visual stimulation. Michael Eaton will be the artist in residence at Art In A Garden 2016, which runs October 27-30, in Flaxmere, Hawarden. Visitors will be able to view and discuss his work and career first hand.

Victoria Tait escapes the city buzz for a spot of relaxation and recuperation.

Only 90 minutes’ drive from Christchurch lies the quaint alpine village of Hanmer Springs. The drive from Christchurch through Hurunui District, with lush forests, rolling hills of vineyards and towering mountains, on its own is enough to get you in the holiday mood. It’s drives like these that make you remember how lucky we are to have such exquisite scenery on our doorstep. Hanmer village itself has developed considerably over the years and could easily be mistaken for a European alpine village thanks to its boutique shops and diverse eateries. There are many fantastic accommodation options and a great range of outdoor and family activities including skiing, jet boating, forest walks and the famous hot pools and spas. Follow the tips on our travel guide below to ensure you experience the best of Hanmer.

stay. Situated at 20 Chisholm Crescent, The St James is a 5-star Qualmark-rated hotel. Choose from deluxe studios, executive spa studios, to one- and two-bedroom apartments that feature kitchens and luxurious fixtures and furnishings. A 10-minute drive from Hanmer’s centre, Select Braemar Lodge is a luxury spa resort offering stunning views across the valley towards the mountains and alpine forests. Complete with spa facilities and an excellent restaurant, it’s the perfect location for a romantic weekend. The Heritage Hanmer Springs Hotel is situated right in the heart of the village and offers fantastic service and facilities ideal for families. Village Lake Apartments are only a stroll away from the thermal pools and spa. It’s luxury 5-star accommodation with 13 two- and three-bedroom apartments from which to choose.

ExpEriEncE. Jet boat down the spectacular Waiau Gorge for an unforgettable experience. Not for the faint-hearted, a bungy jump off the historic 135-year-old Waiau Ferry Bridge includes a 35-metre freefall. Take a forest walk – the Conical Hill route is about an hour round trip and provides great views of the valley and into the forest behind. The Hanmer Forest trail is relatively flat and ideal for walkers and bikers, about a 20-minute walk from the main street. Take an afternoon wander through the shopping village, or hire a tandem bike and take the whole family for a ride through the township. Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa are perfect for melting away any stress, aches or pains. The spa has a wide variety of pools for both fun and relaxation including 12 open-air thermal pools, six private indoor thermal pools, and three sulphur pools. Recent studies have shown that the thermal water takes 173 years to reach the pools. This means the water in which you bathe fell as rain and snow on the mountains of Hanmer 173 years ago – you can’t get much purer than that.

Eat. Hanmer Springs has a large selection of eateries, from cafés and takeaways to more formal dining. Some of our top-rated destinations include: the art deco-inspired Eden Restaurant (formerly Chantellinis) with its private dining rooms, Fives Stags for its hunting lodge feel, the quaint cottage that is No. 31 Restaurant and Bar, and picturesque Altitude Restaurant and Bar (at Braemar Lodge) that boasts floor-to-ceiling windows. Corianders offers authentic Indian cuisine, Rustic Café & Tapas Bar has excellent coffee and great breakfast, and the Hanmer Fish and Chip Shop we love for its café-style cut chips.

shop. Retail therapy is easy with a fantastic selection of contemporary shops. LifeStyles Hanmer Springs is on hand if you find your swimsuit completely out-of-date, while Mhor and Rhom will have you kitted out in style, as both offer high-end brands such as Loobie’s Story, Verge and David Pond. Complete the look with some Beau Coops heels or a Status Anxiety wallet from Mirror Mirror Boutique. Don’t think the kids will be missing out, either, with Stylish Baby & Child stocking the adorable Pretty Brave range of shoes, as well as designer clothing labels, such as Kiwi brand Triangle, and a wide range of toys. Offering jewellery as well as art of all varieties, Majuba Gallery is an ever-changing contemporary art space, while Up The Garden Path has a café in the gift shop that sources a range of homeware, gifts and accessories. Looking for something for the home? You will want to have a browse through Homestead Interiors, with its decadent selection of furniture and homewares, and more.

Mighty Mustang Ross Kiddie drives the exciting North American muscle car.

Even though my first Ford Mustang drive was 45 years ago, it was an experience I’ll never forget, and it reinforced my enthusiasm and desire for the quintessential North American muscle car. That Mustang was a 1970 Boss 302, and it belonged to my sister’s boyfriend, who was based in Christchurch as part of the United States’ Operation Deep Freeze programme. It was left-hand-drive, and I was fortunate enough to take it south for a few miles and return to my rural home near Rolleston. I’ve had a few Mustang drives since, all courtesy of Ford New Zealand, as right-hand-drive cars have become available on the local market. My latest experience was in the sixth-generation model just launched here, and it was as if nothing has changed, the newcomer epitomises the early cars wearing that badge – design, concept, and performance. When you study the new pony car in depth, it has all of the characteristics of the past; it has been deliberately designed to encapsulate retrospective looks, and the detailing is most certainly traditional. Mechanically, it carries familiarity as well, although the engineering is most definitely state-of-the-art. There is just a little bit of a raw, aggressive edge, which, as a driver, makes you relate to its predecessors. The newcomer even has a 5-litre (302 cubic inch) V8 engine. However, it can also be purchased with a turbocharged, 2.3-litre unit, which, from my experience with the Ecoboost four-cylinder series, would certainly be up to the task with its 233kW and 432Nm outputs. Nevertheless, it’s the V8 that appeals to me, and I wasn’t disappointed. It pumps out a hefty 306kW along with 530Nm of torque. In true V8 fashion, it works away with a tantalising growl and bark out the exhaust pipes. There is the choice of a six-speed automatic transmission or sixspeed manual through to the rear wheels, and there are no surprises there, but what the Mustang does deliver is an involving driving experience. It is responsive and eager, and has electronic modes which the driver can set to personal preference, and there’s even a track mode if you want to go drifting at Ruapuna in the weekend. Therein lies a little secret; the Mustang in this form is quite lively at the rear, it's easy to test tyre grip with power on, and although the traction control systems are there to intervene they are non-invasive, and you can initiate oversteer to a certain level. It’s easy to see why that is obtainable. With those healthy power outputs, the ingredients are in place for spirited motoring. And the newcomer handles expertly; there is a lot of rubber on the road with its 19in Pirelli tyres and grip is adequate, unless vigorous throttle application is requested. Up front the turn-in is direct, and accuracy into a corner is decisive. I took the test car on a State Highway 72 run from Loburn to the Malvern Hills. It was the first week of winter, and a frost made me very wary of ice on the shaded corners. I needn’t have worried as the Mustang is directional and controllable, there is just enough mechanical sophistication within the suspension and chassis design so that the driver can push hard with confidence. Incidentally, the suspension is a fully independent set-up, long gone is the Mustang’s live rear axle. The combination of power and handling is enticing. I left the normal drive setting active for most of my time in the test car; I didn’t feel it needed anything more spirited. I pushed fairly hard during testing time. The sound of that big V8 is glorious, yet the fuel usage wasn’t excessive, I took the test car back showing a 14l/100km (20mpg) average. That fits well with Ford’s 12.6l100km (22mpg) claim. At 100km/h it sips away at around 8l/100km (35mpg) with the rev counter showing just 1800rpm in sixth gear.

m

The new range starts in New Zealand at $59,880 for the 2.3-litre, bearing in mind there is also a convertible option that adds around $5000 for each engine variant. The V8 GT fastback lands at $77,880 for both the manual and automatic gearbox options. It is fully specced with Ford’s most up-to-date technology. And while it has a good specification, it’s a car only two occupants can enjoy. Ford market the Mustang as a 2+2, and effectively that is what it is; two youngsters could be seated comfortably in the rear, but it is not an area in which adults would enjoy being. Up front, though, it’s a different story. The seats are glorious and the suspension absorbent even over Christchurch’s broken roads. But its on the highway where the Mustang excels; it is a purposeful and capable high-country charger, and it has just so much appeal it captures attention everywhere. Ford in the United States is on a campaign to relaunch retrospective concepts. With the new Mustang being so incredibly successful, it’s only a matter of time before other icons of the muscle car age roll off the production line.

Hollywood Glam Sophie Matthews gives us her step-by-step guide to creating this new ‘it’ look – the low bun. This is a great versatile look that works on hair of any length and texture. By using products, you can change the look and feel of the style from sleek and smooth to a more textured and carefree look. Add your favourite accessory – a headband, chain or scarf – to complete this glam Hollywood look.

Redken Fabricate

Kevin Murphy Doo.Over

Redken 32 Extreme High Hold Hairspray

Kevin Murphy Dry Powder Finishing Spray

Step 1 On washed dried hair, apply a light spray of a heat-activated texturiser (I recommend Redken Fabricate), dry this into your hair using a blowdryer. Create a wave in the hair by either using curling irons or straighteners. Thoroughly apply a dry powder finishing spray – Kevin Murphy Doo.Over works well. Then, softly tease the area around the crown. Step 2 Place a stretchy headband over the top of your head/ hair. The front of the band can either be across the middle of your forehead or across your hairline.

THE ‘IT’ lOOK: lOW Bun

CreatinG PerfeCt BrowS With so many brow shapes and products on the market, it’s easy to get confused. We’ve spoken to the experts and have some essential tips on brow care. WORDS Victoria tait

Step 3 Starting from your side hairline, just by your ear, grab a 5cm section of hair. Pull that section up, over and then it under the headband. Tuck the ends of the section of the band to secure it to the head; longer hair may need to wrap around more than once. When hair is all wrapped, you can pull out pieces of hair to loosen the look, if you choose. Step 4 Pinching the crown area up slightly will give you more volume. Secure with bobby pins where needed, and finish with an extreme hold hairspray. I’ve used, Redken 32 Extreme High Hold Spray.

From choosing the right tone and shape to selecting products that suit your skill level, the road to brow perfection can seem full of twists and turns. let us show you the way, following this season’s trend of natural full-shaped brows.

ShapeS

texture

Dark block brows are out. look for a colour tone that is similar if not lighter than your hair colour. A great tool to use to aid you with this is the interactive online ‘Benefit Brows Explorer’ (visit www. ballantynes.co.nz and click on the Benefit link). Or ask a beauty expert at your preferred beauty counter.

The best way to determine your natural brow shape is to leave your brows unplucked for at least six to eight weeks. Through this, you will achieve a natural brow growth pattern, rather than forcing brows into an unnatural shape. Work with what nature has given you! Shapes include straight, like natalie Portman, arched like Katy Perry, or rounded like Jennifer lopez.

Several different techniques and products add depth and denseness to your eyebrows. When filling in brows, remember to use a product that is a touch lighter and more muted than your brow hair colour to achieve a natural look. pencils – Choose one with a very fine tip in order to create small strokes that mimic actual hairs, to keep the look as natural as possible. Brush and powder – use these to produce a slightly heavier look, which you can combat by working the product into your brows with a brush. Brow Markers – These offer maximum impact and are ideal for reconstructing shape.

finiShing toucheS Brow gels are a must for thinner brows as they amplify the texture and make them appear thicker. If you have thick unruly brows, a gel is all you need to define your shape. Highlight under your brow to lift it and enhance all that hard work. Make sure you choose a product you are comfortable with. If you’re a beginner, start with a simple product such as Benefit Goof Proof and build towards the more advanced products.

Winter Wellness SolutionS Holistic health and fitness specialist Elly McGuinness gives us her top wellness tips for the keeping healthy during the cooler months. there are plenty of things to enjoy over the winter months, including cosy fires, warm slippers, snowboarding and mulled wine. Here are some suggestions and top nutrition and exercise choices to ensure you keep well during this last part of winter. 1. SoupS and SpiceS Spices are the essence of flavoursome, delicious meals, and they are full of health benefits. Look for recipes that include chilli, cumin, turmeric or ginger as great options to warm you up and boost your health. Another warming spice is cinnamon – excellent for sprinkling over porridge in the morning. A lot of nutrition and flavour can be packed into a homemade soup. It’s also an easy dish to double in size, split into separate portions and then freeze for later. 2. plenty of hot drinkS Be mindful to limit caffeine-containing beverages, such as tea and coffee, and instead try these alternatives: Lemon and honey. Squeeze half a lemon into a mug, add ½-1 teaspoon of honey, and top with hot water for a health-boosting tonic. Add ginger and/or chilli for an extra kick. herbal teas. Brew your own whenever possible, or opt for organic herbs in unbleached tea bags to support your health. One of my favourites is chamomile, which can help promote relaxation.

3. Get outSide for exerciSe There’s something truly invigorating about getting out and walking, or biking in the rain over the winter months. Maybe it’s the reward of a hot shower and cosy slippers that come afterwards, or maybe it’s the mental wellbeing obtained from being out in nature during the months of the year in which we tend to spend more time indoors. There’s no such thing as ‘bad weather’ – just inappropriate clothing. So, dress to the weather, get outside, breathe in that fresh air, and reap the benefits for your physical and mental wellbeing. 4. try a new form of indoor exerciSe There will probably still be days during this time of year when you think it’s just “too cold” or “too rainy” to be outside, but you’re still looking for something to stimulate and strengthen your body. Don’t wait until the New Year to start a new activity. Check out what your local area offers by way of: indoor court hire – try out badminton, squash, volleyball or basketball at a local court (e.g. YMCAs have facilities like these) and enjoy quality time with friends and family as part of your fitness package. Gyms, sports centres and studios – most offer group fitness classes, personal training and sometimes heated swimming pool facilities. Something different – consider ice skating, ceroc or another type of dancing, or an indoor climbing wall. Winter is the time when summer bodies are made. The strength, cardiovascular fitness and aesthetic results you enjoy in the warmer months come as a result of the efforts you put in now. A healthy and active lifestyle requires year-round commitment. Choose one small healthy habit to add today and take one step further on your journey towards optimal health.

Cream of the Crop For one spectacular night, Maddison’s Restaurant held a special degustation menu highlighting the best of what our region can produce. wORdS Vanessa ORtynsky

Paddock to Plate is a seasonal event that showcases the region’s best produce and wine. Held at The Heritage Hotel’s Maddison’s Restaurant, the inaugural dinner saw Christchurch foodies gather to indulge in an unforgettable degustation menu complete with carefully selected wine pairings. with every ingredient sourced locally, the meal was impeccable from start to finish. Family-style dinners are a cause for celebration, and the evening kicked off accordingly. Guests were warmly greeted with glasses of bubbles and invited to settle into seats around a large communal table. The environment at Maddison’s is refined and sophisticated, yet unpretentious. The restaurant was buzzing with excitement, as though we had uncovered one of Christchurch’s best-kept secrets. Sitting down to enjoy the first of seven mouth-watering courses, guests were expertly guided through the wine pairings by

the team from Pegasus Bay wines. Beginning with tuatua with buckwheat custard and macadamia served with Pegasus Bay Gewürztraminer, the entrée set the standard for a mouth-watering evening. Maddison’s chef Simo Abbari and his team elaborated on the exquisite dishes as they continuously appeared from the kitchen. Next up, and one of the evening’s standout tasting plates: fresh market fish tartare with corn curd, popped corn, miso butter, and seaweed. It was light and perfectly matched with a glass of Pegasus Bay Semillon Sauvignon. The evening showed no sign of winding down, as the guests became better acquainted over duck and quail pastilla, sweetened with pear, orange and cucumber salad. Before tucking into the line-caught ikejime-culled fish, with barley broth, fennel slaw, and a barley cracker, we cleansed our palates with orange and carrot juice.

For me, the highlight of the evening was the sorbet, with smoked chardonnay crème fraîche snow, prepared using liquid nitrogen at the table. It was a sight to behold, prompting phones out of the pockets of every blogger and Instagrammer at the table. And the meal didn’t end there; we were also served deconstructed apple crumble topped with freshly foraged pine and yoghurt, and finally, an entirely unique frozen cheese parfait. Ending the meal on a savoury note was unexpectedly satisfying. The careful, appreciative tasting of a degustation menu is a luxury, and Maddison’s played the most polished host. As the extended meal drew to a close, guests lingered as new friends, having shared the experience of such a remarkable meal. Christchurch’s culinary game is constantly reinventing itself and those looking to experience a spectacular soirée should find themselves at Paddock to Plate’s next event.

Thai WiTh a TwisT

Vanessa Ortynsky explores this sleek, elegant Thai restaurant on Victoria Street. PhoTograPhy CHARLIE JACKSON Kum Pun Thai is a contemporary Thai restaurant and beer garden in the heart of Victoria Street’s thriving entertainment district. The sleek, elegant interior makes a statement, and reminds you that this isn’t just your neighbourhood Thai restaurant. The setting is a wonderful place to unwind and take in your surroundings, both indoors and out. The spacious beer garden overlooks the bustling Victoria Street and, during the winter months, it allows for premium bicycle parking for diners who choose to pedal their way to dinner. The extensive menu delights the senses, featuring everything from prawn

pad Thai to soft shell crab and roast duck. i opt for massaman curry and fresh rolls. our meals emerge from the kitchen in the most spectacular fashion – stunning visual masterpieces that we both admire before our first bites. Less traditional than expected, the curry comes with slow-braised lamb shank and kumara mash, providing a Kiwi twist on the Thai specialty. on the side, instead of rice, is a sheaf of crispy noodles, which pairs well with the lamb. The fresh rolls are filled with vegetables and tofu. Served with sweet hoisin sauce, they are devoured instantly. To top off your meal, try one of the authentic dessert items. We had black

sticky rice with ice cream of the day. a Byo restaurant, Kum Pun also features an all-encompassing wine and beer list and intriguing cocktails to impress even the most discerning of palates. The ambience at Kum Pun is formal yet friendly, ideal for both date night or spontaneous drinks with friends. Service is attentive, but not overbearing. our waitress patiently explained the menu and made knowledgeable suggestions. While Thai food isn’t a rarity in Christchurch, Kum Pun Thai offers an experience unlike the rest. With delightfully flavoursome food and warm service, the presentation is really what blew us away.

Jamie and Jasmine’s Wedding A picture-perfect thirty-degree Christchurch day was the scene for Jamie Gough and Jasmine Lange to say “I do” at the Christ’s College Chapel before around 100 of their closest friends and family on Saturday 5 March. An exquisite Monique Lhuillier-gowned Jasmine arrived by vintage Rolls-Royce to an awaiting Jamie Gough, dressed in tailor-made Working Style tails. Rev. Peter Beck, the chapel choir, organist and church bells set the tone for the traditional ceremony. The bridal party had wedding photographs at Mona Vale, the historic family homestead and former private residence of Jamie’s great-grandfather, while guests were transported by city trams to the Canterbury Club where they enjoyed Champagne and canapés on the terrace accompanied by a jazz quartet. The formal black-tie reception included a sixcourse degustation, a Champagne tower and dancing to the band into the night along with a selection of cigars, ports and single-malts in the Billiards Room. The celebrations continued the next day with a Hamptons-style garden party at Jamie’s father’s home, complete with croquet, Pimm’s and panama hats. PhotograPhy Johannes van kan

BaLLantynes’ new accessories DePartment oPens Even though the night was chilly, the welcome was warm at Ballantynes when the new Accessories Department was officially opened. Trays of appetite-seducing temptations were circulated along with flutes of bubbling bliss, before the red ribbon was severed, permitting guests to peruse. Scarves, hats and hosiery plus all the items necessary to complete a lady's look were on abundant display, the pool of outfitenhancing treasure ready to be plunged into. The enjoyment continued as the offered delicacies meandered like a trail of fine taste, leading the assembly to the evening’s conclusion, then the path home and to dreams of fashionable possibilities.

On an evening transported from an English summer to a New Zealand winter – in other words, wet – all things British were being celebrated at the Christchurch Art Gallery. Within the Union Jack strewn haven of class, the latest model from that epitome of motoring excellence, Jaguar, was being launched. As pictures of Britain’s cultural stalwarts gazed down, the covers were whipped away and the steel big cats roared, proclaiming their place as sovereigns of the highways. The time has now come for vehicles of less noble lineage to pull over in deference to these fab felines of the open roads and for discerning motorists to loudly proclaim, Rule Britannia!

A wonderland of elegance beckoned, drawing the attention and seducing the eyes of guests stepping in from the windswept street. Within the sanctum of style, conversation flourished and luscious fluids in glasses caught snippets of light, transforming into stars. The party paused only for owner Debbie Cavit to present her self-written book, celebrating her 25-year journey in the pursuit of design excellence. The elements of furniture, fabric and art escorted the senses on an odyssey of design possibilities, to create the perfect home environment, a cut above all others.

AntArctic Mid-Winter celebrAtion

Siobhan Jackson, Andrew Bell

Richard Lang, John de Vries

There are times when Christchurch feels like the coldest place on earth, especially on a chilly night but it is nothing compared to Antarctica, the continent celebrated on this year’s mid winter. As the wind sliced like a razor’s shivery edge, guests boarded the Hagglund for a thrilling, angular and hairraising ride around the obstacle course at the International Antarctic Centre. Deposited safely back on flat ground, they were welcomed to the U.S. Antarctic Passenger Terminal, for the very first party of its kind to be held there. Food and drink themed to the occasion flowed abundantly and as this was a very Scottish Tartan Club event, glorious whisky was celebrated as the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s recently discovered cache of the golden treasure was told. The Antarctic Heritage Trust and The Hororata Community Trust, did themselves proud staging such an event. You really ought to have been there!

On the evening Jing Song’s Pinot Noir named China Girl was launched at Strowan House, St Andrew’s College, each tongue which tasted the deep red delight, was baptised into a new awareness of vinous excellence. Born on the vine and nurtured by the loving hand of winemaker, Jing Song, the grape’s offspring was transformed into this joyful liquid. From vat to bottle and thence to glass, the progress of this trove of fluid treasure is an adventure which, recalled with each sip, appears set to make this Christchurch winter much cosier.

Wearing a mantle of prosperity, Victoria Street now looks every inch a highway of business and it was from one of the newly erected towers of commerce that First New Zealand Capital announced their presence. Leaving the rain-anointed pavement, guests entered the elegant suite to be welcomed and take the opportunity to explore the contemporary-art-adorned offices. An air of merriment lit the chambers in which the dignified pursuits of business and investment are usually conducted, to refresh those weary from their endeavours. As speeches concluded, it became timely to raise celebratory glasses and to toast the success of the new Christchurch office.

in the category of The Dabbler. We all need our hits at some point, I get that. But at some point, the erratic frenzy of the swipe or scroll of the chosen electronic screen needs to reach a breaking point. It might be time to acknowledge the dimming light of a relationship that Mistress (Trade Me) has taken control of. Close the app, minimise the screen and start Buying Now on your quality relationship time rather than hoping the item will Relist if you miss it.
